We strive to offer children a program that is affordable, fun and safe. One of the key elements of this program is “play!" Through play, children increase their social competence and emotional maturity. Activities will include indoor and outdoor sports, group games, arts & crafts, music, dance and occasional field trips. Each day quiet time will also be offered for participants to complete daily homework.A parent handbook has been prepared for your convenience. It informs you of our policies and procedures as well as to provide valuable information to help you to navigate the many details involved with this program.  Please review this handbook with your child. Jack Elementary Schools.Where: George E. Jack Elementary School. Participants who do not attend George E. Jack during the day will be transported by the MSAD6 transportation department. Parents are responsible for making sure to set up transportation with the department. Drop off and pick up are at the side entrance of George E. Jack. Before School Program (BSP): Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m., excluding all school vacations, inservice days, holidays, or snow days at G.E. Jack School. The BSP will not be held on any unscheduled late arrival days (such as those due to weather). Children attending Edna Libby and Steep Falls Schools will be transported from G.E. Your credit/debit card will be charged on the first of each month automatically. The Parks & Recreation Department should be notified if the payment information needs to be updated should your card expire or needs to be changed for any reason.  Declined payments must be corrected as soon as notification is sent. Failure to make payments on past due balances could result in suspension from the program. Cancellation/Refund Policy:Written notice is required two weeks prior to the desired withdrawal date. A refund will be issued at a pro-rated amount for the remainder of the program, beginning on the first day of the next monthly billing cycle. Any days remaining in the month of withdrawal will not be refunded. The Standish Active Seniors is a group of older adults from Standish and surrounding communities who regularly come together for friendly conversation, community, and social connection. Each meeting brings a new educational topic or entertainment.The group relies on its member volunteers to organize theme events, decorate for holidays, serve meals, plan events, and recruit new members to join. The Standish Parks & Recreation Department supports this group by providing lunches, planning trips and tours, and promoting activities.New members are always welcome! Join us! 12:00 PM - 4:30 PM    Early Dismissal Wednesdays Trips - Urban Air Trip
Join Parks & Recreation Team each early dismissal Wednesday for a road trip to a local attraction. Participants will be picked up from school at Edna Libby School, George E Jack School, or Steep Falls Elementary School. Then the group will have a fun afternoon and return to George E Jack School at 4:30 for pick upIf you are enrolled in our after school program you can register for this program at a discounted rate. 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM    Tai Chi - Tai Chi Thursday begins 12.15
                  Tai Chi is a relaxing and gentle exercise program. It uses slow, multi-directional movements to tone muscles, increase flexibility, improve balance, and to enhance the immune system. Tai Chi also reduces stress and helps to quiet and focus the mind. Studies have shown that it is effective in reducing blood pressure. There are many articles you can research online regarding it's benefits. Tai Chi practice is the recommended exercise for people with MS, Parkinson's Disease, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Daily practice gives an enhanced feeling of well-being.These classes are in the tradition of Chen Man Ching and Silk Reeling Chi Gong in the tradition of Grand Master Feng.Registration prior to class is mandatory and will be accepted at Town Hall or on-line at www.standishrec.com until the Wednesday before the class is held.  Anyone wishing to register after the 8-week session begins will be charged for the entire class or a pro-rated fee of $8.00/class for the remainder of that session, whichever is lower.Please note: If school for MSAD 6 is cancelled due to weather, class will be cancelled and the session will be extended out another week.Date: ThursdaysTime: 9:30 - 10:30 amCost: 8 week session $54 or drop in $8 per class Albert Delaney has studied Tai Chi with Grand Master William Chen, Chi Gong Master Kenneth Cohen, and Don Ethan Miller. Join us each week for a different sport/activity. We aim to support participants to learn the rules, play fair, be active and enjoy playing. Each week we will start with a dynamic warm up games, then start playing and learning the sport/activity for that week. Children attending Edna Libby will be brought to the gym after school for the 3pm session. If your child doesn't attend Edna Libby, please use the gym entrance door to enter the school for the program. For the 4pm session, parents please pick your child up from school and then bring them to the gym entrance just before 4pm.                   Tai Chi is a relaxing and gentle exercise program. It uses slow, multi-directional movements to tone muscles, increase flexibility, improve balance, and to enhance the immune system. Tai Chi also reduces stress and helps to quiet and focus the mind. Studies have shown that it is effective in reducing blood pressure. There are many articles you can research online regarding it's benefits. Tai Chi practice is the recommended exercise for people with MS, Parkinson's Disease, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Maine author Dr. Rob Sanford will be our guest at the Tea & Talk at Standish Municipal Center on January 26 at 1pm. Sanford is a professor of environmental science and policy at the University of Southern Maine. He will visit with us and talk about his book titled  “Reading Rural Landscapes: A Field Guide to New England’s Past.”Have you ever come across stone walls, barbed wire, and other evidence of life gone by while walking in the woods? Sanford will discuss some techniques for interpreting these human artifacts and remnants of history often found in rural Maine. Participants are also invited to share their own insights and experiences with local landscapes.Feb 23.  Barbara BrewerBarbara Brewer will be our guest at the Tea & Talk at Standish Municipal Center on February 23 at 1 pm. Brewer is currently a Standish town employee and public water enthusiast. She will be discussing the early history of the Portland Water District and her book “Drink It In: How Sebago Lake Became Portland’s Greatest Asset”. Her presentation will include highlights of some local history and landmarks through old photos and news articles. Brewer will have extra copies of her book available in exchange for a small donation to the Standish Food Pantry ($15 suggested). March 23  Scott Lindsay, Maine Fish & WildlifeScott Lindsay, Regional Biologist with Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (MDIFW) will talk to us about the many roles the department has in helping to preserve and conserve Maine’s wildlife and wild spaces. He will talk to us about Steep Falls Wildlife Management Area, its history, purpose, importance, how to access it, and what types of recreation are allowed.  April 27  Dee Saffrey, StorytellerDee Saffery is a professional storyteller who will share the art of storytelling. She will illustrate the various aspects of this art with both published stories and personal ones from her career as a US Naval officer, hospital hotel manager, travel agent, hospice and hospital chaplain staff member,r and as a world traveler.

Join us each week for a different sport/activity. We aim to support participants to learn the rules, play fair, be active and enjoy playing. Each week we will start with a dynamic warm up games, then start playing and learning the sport/activity for that week. Children attending Edna Libby will be brought to the gym after school for the 3pm session. If your child doesn't attend Edna Libby, please use the gym entrance door to enter the school for the program. For the 4pm session, parents please pick your child up from school and then bring them to the gym entrance just before 4pm.                   Tai Chi is a relaxing and gentle exercise program. It uses slow, multi-directional movements to tone muscles, increase flexibility, improve balance, and to enhance the immune system. Tai Chi also reduces stress and helps to quiet and focus the mind. Studies have shown that it is effective in reducing blood pressure. There are many articles you can research online regarding it's benefits. Tai Chi practice is the recommended exercise for people with MS, Parkinson's Disease, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Join us each week for a different sport/activity. We aim to support participants to learn the rules, play fair, be active and enjoy playing. Each week we will start with a dynamic warm up games, then start playing and learning the sport/activity for that week. Children attending Edna Libby will be brought to the gym after school for the 3pm session. If your child doesn't attend Edna Libby, please use the gym entrance door to enter the school for the program. For the 4pm session, parents please pick your child up from school and then bring them to the gym entrance just before 4pm. This is a parent and child program, led by recreation staff. Please come prepared to participate and play with your child.Start Smart Flag Football is an introductory club for children ages 4-5 that want to play Flag Football. The Standish Active Seniors is a group of older adults from Standish and surrounding communities who regularly come together for friendly conversation, community, and social connection. Each meeting brings a new educational topic or entertainment.The group relies on its member volunteers to organize theme events, decorate for holidays, serve meals, plan events, and recruit new members to join. The Standish Parks & Recreation Department supports this group by providing lunches, planning trips and tours, and promoting activities.New members are always welcome! Join us!
