Standish Community Dog Park!All visitors should review the Standish Community Dog Park Etiquette & User GuideMission Statement: To establish a fenced-in, off-leash dog park where dogs and dog lovers and friends have a safe, well-maintained environment for recreation and socialization. To promote responsible canine care to Standish area citizens and visitors who will uphold the park’s rules. To respond to the needs of the area for a multi-generational park activity for pets and their people that will be a complement to the town’s existing recreation areas and maintain a positive presence in the community by encouraging recreation through the dog park.When is the park open?The dog park opened in the fall of 2022 and is open daily until snowfall. If weather and conditions permit, the park is open. It may be closed for maintenance, or if the grounds are too wet. The factors considered when deciding to close the park will be based on safety, and just as important, the potential of damage to the grounds. It will be closed in the winter if conditions are unsafe. No admission to the park between 10pm and 4am per Town of Standish ordinance.  Please bring your own bags and review the rules before visiting (see below). The park has had a recent update with the addition of solar lighting, which when charged provide light at dusk and dawn. How is the park funded?The dog park was part of the expansion project at Memorial Park on Route 25 that included new and expanded paved parking, sidewalks, a multipurpose field, playground, and dog park. The dog park received a $25,000 grant awarded by Pet Safe (Standish is one of nine winners in the US). The Town of Standish also received over $360,000 in additional local and federal grants (CDBG and LWCF). The post-construction dog park supplies and amenities such as poop bags, agility elements, shade canopies, benches, etc. will be funded by donations and fundraisers. The Ad-hoc Committee, in partnership with the parks and recreation department, developed a management plan for rules and on-going maintenance of the park. The rules and management of the park will be enforced by volunteers who are Standish residents who have participated in the Dog Park Ambassador Program, and have been endorsed by the parks and recreation department. How to get involved:-Make a donation @ www.standishrec.com or in person at Town Hall (checks payable to: Town of Standish-Participate in any offered fundraisers.  -Donate bottles to our Clynk account (bags available at Parks & Rec office)-Follow the “Standish Community Dog Park” Facebook page for updates-Take good care of the park. Per Maine State Law, dog owners or keepers are solely liable for damages or injuries caused by their dog(s). Bring no more than three (3) dogs per adult into the park. DISPOSE of PET WASTE IMMEDIATELY! Discourage dogs from digging holes. Please refill any holes. Dogs must be licensed, free of infection, parasites and have ID/rabies tags. NO AGGRESSIVE DOGS: dogs displaying aggressive behavior must leave. Puppies must have core vaccines and be at least four (4) months old. NO female dogs in heat allowed. Dogs must be on leash when entering and exiting the park gates. Dogs must be collared or harnessed but please remove spike, prong, and pinch collars before entering the park. Please supervise your dog(s) at all times. No children under 10 years old allowed; Children under 16 must be with an adult. No smoking, glass containers, toys, or human food. Use caution with dog treats. If your dog seems timid, stressed, overly aroused, or aggressive, please take it out of the off-leash area IMMEDIATELY. A 6-week T-ball program is an excellent way to introduce your child to the fundamentals of baseball in a fun and supportive environment. Over the course of the program, children will have the opportunity to learn and practice essential skills such as throwing, hitting, and catching, which are crucial for their development in the sport. Additionally, participating in T-ball helps young players improve their hand-eye coordination and overall motor skills. The program is designed to be engaging and interactive, ensuring that children not only learn the basics of the game but also develop a love for sports and teamwork. Coaches typically emphasize positive reinforcement and encouragement, creating a nurturing atmosphere where children can build confidence and enjoy physical activity.Dates: Thursday's 5/1-6/5Time: 5:00pm-6:00pm           Saturday game schedule TBD  Location: Standish Memorial Park (Softball Fields)Ages: 4-6 years oldCost: $60 Please bring your child with: Water Sneakers/Cleats (optional)  Glove  Helmet  Limited bats & helmets will be on site available to use.Additional Information: This is a co-ed league Registration for the 2025 season closes Wednesday, April 30th *We are unable to accommodate special requests for team placement. If you are a coach of a team, your child will be placed on the team you coach. Each age division will practice on the same day and time regardless of team placement.*Volunteer Coaches:The success of this program relies heavily on parent volunteers. No experience is necessary! We can help you. If you enjoy working with kids a weekly curriculum will be provided by the recreation department for you to use if needed, then you are well on your way to making a positive impact on a child in your community! We need you! We will do our best to provide you with a co-coach, so you won't have to handle it alone. A 50% program fee credit will be applied to all volunteer coaches at the end of the season. Please be sure to fill out the volunteer paperwork before the start of T-Ball season! Cancellations:In the event of game cancellations due to poor weather conditions, there will be a message on the Recreation Department's website, an email blast will be sent, and we will post a message on our Facebook page. This message will be posted no later then 12:00pm the day of practice and games. This Beginner Archery Program is designed for beginners who are just getting into the sport or want to improve their skills. It will guide you through the basics of archery, including proper stance, form, and technique, to help you build a solid foundation. By the end of this 5-week starter program, your kid should feel more comfortable with the basic techniques of archery: proper stance, form, drawing the bow, and releasing arrows with accuracy.  Instructor: Roman O'Brienhalla & Dylan LamarreGrade: 4th - 6th Cost: $85/participant      Time: 6pm - 7pm      Where: Standish Memorial Park695 Ossipee Trl W, Standish, ME 04084When: Friday's 5/9/25 - 6/5/25      (5 Week Program)Week 1: Introduction to Archery and Basic Skills- Introduction to Archery Equipment and Safety Objective: Familiarize yourself with the equipment and basic safety rules. Bow: Learn the different types of bows (Long, Recurve, Compound) and basic parts of the bow (limbs, riser, string, sight). Arrows: Understand arrow types and components (shaft, Fletching, point). Safety Gear: Learn how to properly wear the bow release, and an arm guard. Always point the bow in a safe direction. Don’t dry-fire the bow (shoot without an arrow). Follow all range rules and listen to instructors. Equipment Overview: Safety:        Practice: Practice nocking an arrow (placing the arrow on the string) and learning the correct grip on the bow. Week 2: Stance, Form, and Shooting Basics Objective: Focus on establishing a solid stance and form for consistent shooting. Feet shoulder-width apart, facing sideways to the target. Proper Stance:      Slight bend in your knees for balance. Relax your body; avoid tension in your shoulders or arms. Grip and Draw: Hold the bow with a relaxed grip — don’t squeeze too tight. Practice drawing the bowstring back using your back muscles, not your arms. Anchor Point: Establish a consistent anchor point (where your drawing hand touches your face, corner of your mouth or chin).       Practice: Practice shooting 3-5 arrows at a target from 10 yards, focusing on form and relaxation. Week 3: Aiming and Focus Objective: Learn basic aiming techniques and mental focus. Focus on the tip of your arrow or use a sight (if applicable) to aim. Learn the difference between open sight aiming (no sight) and sighted shooting (using a bow sight). Practice focusing on your shot process, not the target. Breathing techniques to relax before drawing the bow. Aiming: Mental Focus:          Practice: Shoot 3-5 arrows, aiming at a target from 10 yards. Focus on aiming and smooth release. Record your shots (where they land) to track progress. Week 4: Building Consistency and StrengthDay 1: Review and Practice Shooting Objective: Strengthen your shooting form and consistency. Check your stance and form before every shot. Focus on consistent bow hand placement and smooth drawing. Smooth release of the string (don’t jerk the bow). Focus on follow-through: Keep the bow arm extended after the shot and relax your fingers. Review Stance and Form: Shot Execution:          Practice: Shoot 5 arrows at 10 yards. Aim for consistent grouping (keeping the arrows in a small area of the target). Take note of any adjustments you need to make (form, aiming). Week 5: Mental Focus and Accuracy Drills Objective: Improve mental clarity and accuracy. Use visualization: Imagine hitting the bullseye before shooting. Focus on controlling your breath and staying calm. Shoot at 5-10 yards, aiming for a specific spot on the target. Practice shooting 3 arrows, then reset your form and aim again. Mental Focus: Accuracy Drill:        Practice: Shoot 3-5 arrows at a target, aiming for tight groupings. Focus on a smooth release and clean follow-through. A 6-week T-ball program is an excellent way to introduce your child to the fundamentals of baseball in a fun and supportive environment. Over the course of the program, children will have the opportunity to learn and practice essential skills such as throwing, hitting, and catching, which are crucial for their development in the sport. Additionally, participating in T-ball helps young players improve their hand-eye coordination and overall motor skills. The program is designed to be engaging and interactive, ensuring that children not only learn the basics of the game but also develop a love for sports and teamwork. We need you! We will do our best to provide you with a co-coach, so you won't have to handle it alone. A 50% program fee credit will be applied to all volunteer coaches at the end of the season. Please be sure to fill out the volunteer paperwork before the start of T-Ball season! Cancellations:In the event of game cancellations due to poor weather conditions, there will be a message on the Recreation Department's website, an email blast will be sent, and we will post a message on our Facebook page. The post-construction dog park supplies and amenities such as poop bags, agility elements, shade canopies, benches, etc. will be funded by donations and fundraisers. The Ad-hoc Committee, in partnership with the parks and recreation department, developed a management plan for rules and on-going maintenance of the park. The Town of Standish also received over $360,000 in additional local and federal grants (CDBG and LWCF). The post-construction dog park supplies and amenities such as poop bags, agility elements, shade canopies, benches, etc. will be funded by donations and fundraisers. The Ad-hoc Committee, in partnership with the parks and recreation department, developed a management plan for rules and on-going maintenance of the park. Standish Community Dog Park!All visitors should review the Standish Community Dog Park Etiquette & User GuideMission Statement: To establish a fenced-in, off-leash dog park where dogs and dog lovers and friends have a safe, well-maintained environment for recreation and socialization. To promote responsible canine care to Standish area citizens and visitors who will uphold the park’s rules. To respond to the needs of the area for a multi-generational park activity for pets and their people that will be a complement to the town’s existing recreation areas and maintain a positive presence in the community by encouraging recreation through the dog park.When is the park open?The dog park opened in the fall of 2022 and is open daily until snowfall. If weather and conditions permit, the park is open. It may be closed for maintenance, or if the grounds are too wet. The factors considered when deciding to close the park will be based on safety, and just as important, the potential of damage to the grounds. It will be closed in the winter if conditions are unsafe. No admission to the park between 10pm and 4am per Town of Standish ordinance.  Please bring your own bags and review the rules before visiting (see below). The park has had a recent update with the addition of solar lighting, which when charged provide light at dusk and dawn. How is the park funded?The dog park was part of the expansion project at Memorial Park on Route 25 that included new and expanded paved parking, sidewalks, a multipurpose field, playground, and dog park. The dog park received a $25,000 grant awarded by Pet Safe (Standish is one of nine winners in the US). The Town of Standish also received over $360,000 in additional local and federal grants (CDBG and LWCF). The post-construction dog park supplies and amenities such as poop bags, agility elements, shade canopies, benches, etc. will be funded by donations and fundraisers. The Ad-hoc Committee, in partnership with the parks and recreation department, developed a management plan for rules and on-going maintenance of the park. The rules and management of the park will be enforced by volunteers who are Standish residents who have participated in the Dog Park Ambassador Program, and have been endorsed by the parks and recreation department. How to get involved:-Make a donation @ www.standishrec.com or in person at Town Hall (checks payable to: Town of Standish-Participate in any offered fundraisers.  -Donate bottles to our Clynk account (bags available at Parks & Rec office)-Follow the “Standish Community Dog Park” Facebook page for updates-Take good care of the park. Be good a citizen and follow the guidelines and rules set by the department and committee. How to donate: To donate online you will need to create a household account if do not already have one. Simply choose to "register" for the amount you wish to donate below. If you do not want to donate online, you can send a check payable to Town of Standish and write in the memo line "Dog Park Donation" and mail to:Standish Parks & Recreation Department 175 Northeast Rd.Standish, ME 04084. Your donation is tax deductible.Our tax ID # is: 01-6000378Banner Program: Businesses and Organizations that wish to have a banner hung at the dog park for one calendar year can do so with a donation of $200 made out to the Standish Parks & Recreation Department. Banners will need to be created by the business or organization at their expense and must be no larger then 4 X 6. Banners can be dropped off at the recreation department and will be placed at the dog park by a member of the parks staff. We are also happy to make your online donation for you by phone.
