Join us as we visit the Maine Military Museum & Learning Center in South Portland.
The museum’s mission is to teach today’s and future generations the meaning of “SERVICE ABOVE SELF.”
Through authentic artifacts displayed in various formats throughout the museum, viewers can witness the experiences and sacrifices of past members of our Armed Forces.
Museum exhibits cover every aspect of military service from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan and Iraq. The primary focus is American Prisoners of War (POWs) from our Civil War up to the Vietnam Conflict.
The museum is a tribute to those who have served in the military, during peacetime, and in war. It is also a place to honor those who have paid the ultimate price while serving the state of Maine and our nation over the years.
One of the museum’s highlights is a full-scale replica of a Vietnam Prisoner of War cell. The museum also houses over 50 uniformed life-like mannequins, thousands of artifacts, and framed insignia.
If we are lucky, we will encounter veterans and other volunteers who help keep the exhibits accurate! This tour takes at least 1 1/2 hours to completely experience what it has to offer!
We will stop for lunch at Coppersmith Tavern and Table in South Portland on our way back to Standish. (Cost of lunch on your own).
Cost: $10.00 includes transportation and tour (cost of lunch is on your own). Although admission is free, you may donate at the museum if you wish, as they are able to remain open to the public through the generosity of donations.
We will meet at Standish Town Hall and leave promptly at 10:30am and return at approximately 3:00pm. Please park in the upper level parking lot.
