Event Postponed
Hello everyone,
Ryan and I had a meeting with Members of Maine Parks and Recreation Association today to learn what other recreation departments are doing with their Halloween events scheduled for this weekend. As you can imagine, our parks and recreation colleagues in those affected communities are really struggling right now, too. Many are postponing or canceling their scheduled events.
The school department informed us that if the suspect is still at large by 6am tomorrow, the building will remain closed.
That said, and even if the suspect is located, our team feels it would be insensitive to hold an event to celebrate Halloween given it’s origin - a festival celebrating the day the dead returned to their homes and people dressed in costumes to ward off the spirits. Additionally, the knowledge that one of the victims was reportedly an alumnus of the Bonny Eagle School District, feels particularly insensitive.
With consideration of all that, we have decided to postpone the Spooktacular event. We would like to change it to something like a Friendsgiving to help bring our community together with gratitude for each other. I'm not sure what that looks like yet, or what the date will be, but we hope you will be willing to be a part of it with us.
